Hells Canyon Reservoir

Idaho, Oregon

Lake Freshwater
Hells Canyon Reservoir, a colossal impoundment on the Snake River within North America's deepest gorge, presents a compelling multi-species fishery on the Oregon side. This remote, rugged reservoir offers a unique angling experience, primarily supporting robust warmwater populations, notably impressive smallmouth bass, alongside crappie, bluegill, and various catfish. Resident rainbow trout and highly regulated sturgeon are also present in deeper, cooler sections.

Optimal warmwater angling prevails from late spring through early autumn, with bass fishing peaking May through October. A comprehensive arsenal of lures, including plastic worms and jigs, proves highly effective when targeting rocky points and submerged structures. Panfish are readily engaged with small jigs or natural baits; catfish respond favorably to cut baits. Access is challenging, largely limited to boat-based approaches from the Hells Canyon Dam area, or via extended boat travel from Idaho.

Anglers must be acutely aware of and strictly adhere to the complex regulations that govern Hells Canyon Reservoir. Being an interstate body of water, regulations can be set by both the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), and rules can vary depending on which side of the river you are fishing or if you cross state lines. Specific bag limits, size restrictions, and gear restrictions for all species, especially sturgeon, are critical to check. The remote nature also means limited services, so anglers should be well-prepared with supplies, fuel, and safety gear. Hells Canyon Reservoir offers a unique, challenging, and highly rewarding angling experience within one of North America's most spectacular and rugged landscapes.
