Oak Creek

Oak Creek, flowing through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon, is one of Arizona’s premier trout streams. Known for its red rock scenery and cool, clear waters, Oak Creek is stocked with rainbow trout during spring and summer and supports a resident population of wild brown trout, particularly in its upper reaches.

The creek is best suited for fly fishing, with dry flies, beadhead nymphs, and small streamers all producing good results. Spin anglers do well with spinners and salmon eggs. Stealth and light gear are essential, as the creek is narrow and often clear. The section from Slide Rock State Park to Sterling Springs Hatchery is designated catch-and-release with artificial flies and barbless hooks only, offering a more technical experience.

Fishing is productive from spring through fall, with hatches of mayflies and caddisflies peaking in warmer months. Early morning outings are ideal during summer to avoid tourists, and water clarity should be monitored after monsoon rains.
