Gunlock Reservoir

Gunlock · Utah

Lake Freshwater
Gunlock Reservoir, near St. George, is a scenic desert lake offering productive warmwater fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and seasonal catches of crappie and catfish. The 266-acre reservoir is nestled among red sandstone cliffs and is a favored destination for southern Utah bass anglers.

Largemouth bass are the main target, with spring and early summer producing excellent action. Spinnerbaits, plastics, and topwater lures work well near structure and vegetation. Bass often range 1–3 pounds, with larger specimens possible.

Bluegill are abundant and ideal for youth anglers using worms or small jigs. Crappie and channel catfish are caught less frequently but add diversity to the fishery.

Gunlock’s water level varies based on irrigation needs and drought. Anglers should check current conditions, especially in low water years. The lake has a boat ramp, restrooms, and limited camping within Gunlock State Park. Kayaks and float tubes are also effective.

Utah’s general regulations apply: six bass may be kept, with only one over 12 inches. Current rules should always be verified in the Utah Fishing Guidebook.

With its rugged scenery and improving fish populations, Gunlock Reservoir is a solid alternative for bass and bluegill fishing in a quieter setting than nearby Sand Hollow.
