Santa Ana River Lakes in Santa Ana, CA, is a premier private pay-to-fish facility offering year-round access to trophy trout and catfish. Managed independently of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, this fishery stocks rainbow trout and channel catfish on a weekly basis from private hatcheries, ensuring high catch rates and quality angling experiences.
From late fall through spring, rainbow trout dominate. These fish often exceed 5 pounds, with trophy specimens stocked regularly. Anglers employ PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and lures such as Kastmasters and Mice Tails from both shore and rental boats.
In summer, catfish become the target species, with frequent stockings and night fishing events that draw experienced anglers. Large catfish over 10 pounds are not uncommon and respond to cut mackerel, blood bait, and commercial dough bait.
The lake also hosts seasonal stockings of tilapia and maintains populations of carp and sturgeon. Shore access is excellent, and boats and float tubes are allowed within limits. The Kids’ Pond caters to children under 12 with separate stocking and safe, supervised access.
As a private lake, no state fishing license is required. A daily entry fee covers a five-fish limit. Santa Ana River Lakes is one of the region’s most successful and reliable fisheries, offering convenience, accessibility, and trophy potential.
