Quail Lake

Quail Lake, located near Gorman, CA, is a narrow, high-desert reservoir that offers consistent shore-based fishing for striped bass, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Fed by the California Aqueduct system, the lake supports healthy fish populations in a remote and uncrowded environment.

Striped bass are the lake’s top draw, with best results during cooler weather and low-light periods. Anglers commonly cast swimbaits, jerkbaits, or use bait such as anchovies along the rocky shoreline. Largemouth bass are present year-round, with peak activity during spring. Soft plastics and crankbaits fished near submerged rocks and brush yield solid results.

Catfishing is productive throughout summer, especially in the evening. Cut baits, chicken liver, and shrimp fished on the bottom along deeper banks consistently attract channel catfish. Other available species include bluegill and carp, though these are less frequently targeted.

Due to boating restrictions, all fishing is from shore, and the lake lacks developed amenities. Access is via a roadside pullout on Highway 138, with the southern shore and inlet area offering the best fishing. Wind conditions can be extreme, so proper gear and clothing are essential. Despite its rugged setting, Quail Lake delivers strong year-round action and is managed under California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations.
