Bear River Reservoir Lower

Kit Carson · California

Lake Freshwater
Lower Bear River Reservoir, tucked away near Kit Carson, CA, is a great spot for a laid-back fishing trip in the Sierra Nevada. Sitting at around 5,800 feet elevation and covering 727 acres, this reservoir offers a solid chance to catch rainbow, brown, and lake trout. It’s stocked regularly by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, PG&E, and Bear River Lake Resort—so there’s usually something biting.

Anglers here have had luck using a variety of lures and baits like Rapalas, Flatfish, Hum-dingers, J-Plugs, and good ol' worms, especially when trolled behind flashers or dodgers. Whether you’re fishing from shore or taking the boat out, you’ll find action, especially in deeper sections ranging from 20 to 60 feet.

Beyond fishing, the area is perfect for boating, hiking, and camping. Bear River Lake Resort makes things easy with cabin rentals, boat rentals, a launch ramp, and even an on-site store. In June, the reservoir hosts a fun fishing derby that draws locals and visitors alike.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or just out to relax and cast a line, Lower Bear River Reservoir is a beautiful, low-key spot to enjoy the outdoors and maybe even reel in dinner.
