C. C. Cragin Reservoir

C.C. Cragin Reservoir, commonly known as Blue Ridge Reservoir, is a scenic and narrow high-country lake located near Payson, AZ. Surrounded by steep canyon walls and thick pine forest, the lake sits at 6,700 feet elevation and covers approximately 198 acres when full. This unique fishery is stocked with rainbow trout and tiger trout, a sterile hybrid of brown and brook trout. The Arizona Game and Fish Department began stocking tiger trout in recent years, and anglers now have the rare opportunity to catch this aggressive, hard-fighting species in a beautiful alpine setting. Trout fishing is best from May through October. Shore access is limited due to steep terrain, so most anglers fish from boats, kayaks, or float tubes. Popular baits include worms, PowerBait, and salmon eggs, while small spinners, spoons, and flies also produce well. Tiger trout respond aggressively to streamers and small jerkbaits. Camping is primitive and dispersed, and there are vault toilets at the boat launch. Gas motors are prohibited—electric or paddle craft only. The reservoir’s cold, clear water and remote location help maintain water quality and fish health. Due to steep cliffs and limited flat ground, this lake is best suited for experienced anglers comfortable with shoreline scrambling or launching watercraft.
